Mmadinotshi is the biggest measured baobab in the world.
The Mmadinotshi baobab is situated in the northeastern part of Botswana in the protected area of the Okavango Delta.
On the 23rd of July 2026 it size measurments were taken by Dr Sarah Venter and Jacobus Brummer with the help of four setswana trackers, Orateng Matamo (Dennis), Kenneth Mate, Fraye Karunga, Mokove Nkuveshi.
The name Mmadinotshi means “Mother of the Bees” in Baswarwa language. The name was given to the tree by Kewame Nxhamoshee, Xishee Kashee and Simon Mboma the Baswarwa (Bushmen) trackers who visited the tree in 2019 with Jaco Brummer. The tree was named this because it had a bees nest in its branches at the time.
The tree has a hollow in its main trunk which is difficult to get inside of. Inside are hundreds of bats that roost in the tree during the day.
Core samples were taken with an increment borer and sent to iThemba labs for carbon dating. At the time of writing there were no results yet.
