Young baobabs are being planted in “plantation-style” in seven homesteads in Mabvete village in northern Venda. This method is being used to boost the young baobabs growth so that they reach a “safe” height before wild planting. See post here.
Newly planted baobabs in plantation-style
This week we visited the trees to see how they were doing. We tagged each tree for future identification and measured their height and basal diameter so that we can record how quickly they grow in this type of environment
Each of the Baobab Guardians will be given an incentive payment for each centimeter of growth. This much needed income in the area should also encourage the Guardian to protect the trees from goats and to give the plants extra water and compost.
